Robotics Course for Homeschooling Students Starts October 13, 2021

Please join us for this HSU Spark Scholars program called Sensing and Navigation for Robots.

This 4-week course is held on Wednesdays from October 13th – Nov. 3rd from 9-11am. The program is geared for home school middle and high school students who have an interest in robotics. Using Arduino based robots, students will learn the operation of motor encoders and Inertial Measurements Units (IMUs). Students will learn to program and implement these devices to gain odometry and orientation data used for autonomous robot navigation.

For the course, students will be working in teams of two.

Week 1: Introduction of Arduino platform and programming environment

Week 2: Using motor encoders for motor speed and position control

Week 3: Using Microelectromechanical system IMUs, especially the onboard X-axis gyroscope and accelerometer along with the compass to track a robot’s path (odometry).

Week 4: Mission plan and command robot to navigate closed course

  • Please let us know if you will be unable to attend any session or need to drop out of the classes as there is a wait list.
  • Do not attend the course if the participant is not feeling well or running a temperature over 99.5 degrees.
  • Students should bring a personalized water bottle to the classes which may be refilled in the drinking fountain.
