High School Students are invited to join the HSU Educational Foundation for the HSU Werx Advanced Robotics series. This HSU Werx South group meets on Tuesdays (and Thursdays during build season) from 2:30 until 5pm at the HSU Innovation Institute South location – 709 Anchors Street FWB. Participants are encouraged to come as often as they are able throughout the year.
The program will help students practice the engineering design process through several hands on projects. HSU Werx South will learn simple to complex electrical, autonomous and CAD principles. The group will have the opportunity to participate in three hands-on advanced robotics projects throughout the year.
They include:
EV( Electric Vehicle) Build – HSU Educational Foundation will be hosting an event at the HSU STEM range featuring off-road, autonomous electric vehicles. The vehicles for this event are required to perform on an off-road course fully autonomous, powered by an electric motor. Each vehicle to be built will be around the size of a 4-wheeler with little design constraints.
FIRST Robotics Competition Team – Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.” Under strict rules, limited time and resources, teams of students are challenged to design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting competition.
Sky Dreamer – The HSU Educational Foundation, with FieldWerx stakeholders, will construct a heavy lift research vehicle to be known as “Sky Dreamer” that will serve as a test bed and launch platform for Air Force initiatives. It is anticipated that Sky Dreamer will host ongoing design challenges and research projects of FieldWerx that will benefit students and professionals in NW Florida, as well as the Air Force. The project will engage students in a real world mission that will prepare them for careers in the aerospace industry, and involving a number of skilled STEM applications such as teaching concepts to include: UAS Preliminary Design, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Prototyping and Manufacturing, CNC Machining, 3D Printing, Composite Fabrication, Payload and Sensor Integration , Autopilot Design and Gain Tuning , Matlab / Simulink , Flight Testing.
Thank you to the HSU Educational Foundation Stakeholders making this program possible: Florida Power and Light, Boeing, Air Force Research Lab, and Step One Automotive Group!
- Students should bring a personalized water bottle to the classes which may be refilled in the drinking fountain.
*If you have a badge, remember to bring it with you every time you enter the building. If you do not have one, one will be provided the first class you attend.
Class dates: Tue, Aug 9, 2022, 2:30 PM – Fri, Jun 2, 2023, 5:00 PM CDT
